All You Need Is Love

person unwrapping a gift

Have you ever given a gift that wasn’t well-received by the recipient? That’s a tough –and often awkward – situation, isn’t it?

Or have you ever been on the receiving end of a gift that didn’t quite hit the mark the way you would have liked?

I think the best gifts really have nothing to do with cost or extravagance, but instead, the best gifts are the ones that make us feel known…and seen…and loved.

At this time of year, especially, we can get very focused on buying gifts and giving gifts, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

But what if, this year, we take some time – really, take some extended time – to focus on receiving before we put our time, energy, and focus into giving?

Because we’ve already been given an amazing gift. A gift hand-crafted for each one of us. A gift that truly does keep on giving.

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16

We have been given the indwelling presence of Jesus. And it doesn’t stop there. This is the best version ever of “…but wait! There’s more!”

We not only get the presence of Jesus, but John 3:16 tells us that we also get eternal life. And it's because of God's love for his kids - for us - that we are given this gift.

How have you received this gift? Does it make you feel truly seen, known, and loved?

What if, this Christmas season, we take some time to sit with the reality of this incredible gift that has already been given to us?

What if we allow ourselves to truly receive all that this gift is?

Not just recognize.

Not just acknowledge.

Actually receive it so that it fills us from within, and we experience this transformational love…

And then and only then, do we put our time and energy and focus into giving.

So that our giving is from an overflow of our receiving this gift of love from our heavenly Father.
